    Hey Folks,
I am planning a peak bagging trip to the Great Range. I Plan on bagging Mount Marcy and a few other peaks The week of September 17. I have an old military sleeping bag and I am worried about the temperatures at that time of year. Any one have advise for camping in the Dack's at this time of year at 3000 ft. Thanks OJ

Be prepared for rain, snow, frost, humidity, cold nights, warm nights, lightning, bears, mud, wind, verglas, sun, other than that, it is pretty standard.

Given the refusal of the state of NY to allow me my second amendment rights. I am really worried about being prepared for Bears, I wonder if my flare gun is ok?......yea go ahead OJ and burn 6 million acres down.....I was thinking that a few fire crackers might make a bear run the other way.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO cold! OJ: are you going alone on the 'baggin trip? Also how warm is the sleeping bag? +1 to everything KZKlimber says...just be prepared for anything.

With bears, just make a shit-load of noise when you're cooking and stash your things in a tree far away from camp. Mice and other rodents can be a real PIA in the Adirondacks, too...don't leave crumbs in the pocket of that favorite jacket of yours or that waterproof shell will have be hemorrhaging water.

OJ- I've hiked in the dacks for like, 10 years, and haven't encountered a bear I couldn't scare away or walk away from. Just make sure you store your food properly.

As far as the sleeping bag goes, I'd prepare for some damn cold nights and chilly rain. A 25° synthetic would keep you nice and toasty. My old military bag is probably comparable to a 35 degree sack, and I've been cold this time of year.

Saturday we waded thru snow on the top of Algonquin. Winter felt great.
