Grizzly sight on the Main Flow
Its funny how a bunch of ridiculous choices can bring you to something. Griz blew back into town so we headed up the Narrows this morning for a little pre-christmas eve outing. Well after a solo on the Main gully under thick but of course wet conditions which should have lead to taking off for some breakfast, someone had a thought that it was a good idea to take a closer look at the crux of main flow. We went around P1 by scrambling on the right to get up. P2 went on a mixed line on the far left corner past an old manky pin. Griz utilized a mix of surprisingly good cams, a dry overhang to lift spirits and a long reach out right to reach the daggers. Well worth the effort despite the rain and made for a great independent mixed alternative when the crux pillar is not down yet. P3 looked decent but before any thoughts of going on came about, we got a shower of about 80lb's of ice caving off from high above.
Its a shame its pouring rain now, but the narrows had more ice then all of this year. By the time we left the gully's were rivers.

Re: Grizzly sight on the Main Flow
Nice work fellows!! I've suspected that grizzly bear would show up again, and that alternate P2 sounds like pure fun.
Definitely a bummer about the rain. I was up on Tuesday night and found pretty fat ice in both the dead deer and main gully, with lots of little interesting ice blobs in many unusual spots....kind of neat how freezing rain can set the stage for seldom seen mixed possabilities.
Great to see others out on Tues evening/night (Woody, John, et al). See ya'll again when it gets colder!

Re: Grizzly sight on the Main Flow
Hey Steve, did you hear anything about a rescue on Tuesday up there? Someone overheard on there dispatch radio that a climber was in need of assistance near Kittnersville.
I have to say that the ice probably made out better then expected given how much was there, it was still well bonded even after 5 hours of rain. Just hoping this Sat is not as bad, but we will see.

Re: Grizzly sight on the Main Flow
Didn't hear anything about a rescue, but hope all is well.
Yeah, the weather outlook (for ice longevity) looks pretty grim for this comming Saturday, but like you said, we will see. At the latest, we should be back in action at the Narrows by 1/3/09.

Does the mixed line on the left side on the second pitch of main flow (its now bolted - 4 bolts I think) have a name?
Edit: A bunch of searches turned up nothing but this old thread - thanks in advance!
