    NZ Ice Wye Creek

Wye Creek, South Island, NZ Ice Report 7/3/2006

I had a couple days on my hands so I decided to go ice climbing at the "most accessablile" ice on the south island.
A 4 hour ski/snowshoe in - up the Remarkables Ski Field, over a pass, down the other side to the lip of a large valley where you drop your skis (valley walls are too steep to ski back out), drop 500m to the valley floor and go halfway up the other side. Good camping on the valley floor and on the lip of the valley (potable running water, shelter from the wind)

The ice: It's early season, and the routes are wet, but mostly formed. Lots of chandiliering (sp?) There are a few bolted mixed lines, M6 - M8 (the general consensus is that they're much harder than this, I havn't tried them)
Maybe 20 ice lines total, half pitch to full pitch, WI 2 - 5.
Helicopter access to the valley is possible - probably a 5-10 minute flight.
    Pictures to follow
Signing out from Dunedin, NZ and spoiled rotten by the likes of Smuggs, Lake W, Poko.
