View Full Version : How much damage did the rain do?

I heard it rained pretty hard over the past 24 hours in the MTW Valley area. That plus the warm temps makes me think a whole lot of ice got washed away. Anybody have any drive by reports of Cannon or know of conditions in the MTW gullies?

Took a walk up Washington with some gear, rock and ice, to try Pinnacle or one of the gullies this past Sunday. Odell's looks decent but the attached picture is what we found at Pinnacle Gully. The ice will need a bit of time to bulk back up after the rain. We climbed the first pitch to find there was no ice connecting the rest of the pitches. The ice was very unstable, weak, and discontinuous. With the rain and slush we retreated and hope to get up another weekend.691

Thanks for the response. I hiked up to the talus field under the Dike to take a look. There's nothing but rock until close to the top of P2.

Is that Pinnacle? It looks way better than it did a few weeks ago. How much of that washed away?

Not a lot washed away. It was slush and melting fast but there is still plenty to climb (pending some sub 32F). The ice on the left side transitions between rock and the running water (our failed route from Sunday). The ice/snow on the right looks plenty climbable! I think it would be a fine route this weekend! We just happened to attempt it when it was soft and slush and found we couldn't gain passage on the left side due to a waterfall.

We went up Odell's Gully today (11/20/2013), and the ice was soft but good and protectable. We even managed to put one or two 22cm screws. Pinnacle seemed a little bit more wet, but probably doable. :)
