View Full Version : Left Hand Monkey Wrench 1/16/15

My husband and I climbed Left Hand Monkey Wrench today, 1/16/15, and it was a cold, windy, and snowy day! The wind chill warnings for NH were definitely felt! It was even snowing heavily for a period. The approach trail to LHMW is nice and packed, and without issues. The climb is fat, but with the cold temperatures, everything was breaking loose with each swing. Beware of falling ice! We did the upper pitch of Hitchcock Gully, and it was fat and great! The lower part of the climb was breaking free of ice from the cold temps, but the middle and upper sections were soft and taking picks with only one swing! The ice to the left and right of upper Hitchcock Gully is fat and beautiful! There were a few parties of two out and about around the area.

Willey's Slide---looks good
Cinema---Too thin to do I would say
Elephant Head---Fat at the bottom, and thin and vertical at the top.
Flume Cascade---looks good
Silver Cascade---looks good
Landslide Gully---looks good
Shoestring Gully---looks good

Frankenstein Cliffs from the road:
Smear---looks good
Pegasus---Cave route looks good
Chia---Crux pillar has some nice blue ice
Practice slabs---not too much there
Waterfall---looks to be in, but not super fat
Standard Route---looks good, even the top pillars
Dracula---looks good

Thank you for posting. I've been looking for some recent conditions out of the area. I'll post an update on Shoestring later in the weekend.
